Web design for builders: win more residential and commercial contracts

Builders compete for high-value contracts that often go to whoever looks most credible online. Here's what your website needs to win them.

Building work is high-value and high-stakes. Whether a customer is hiring you for an extension, a loft conversion, or a commercial fitout, they're spending significant money and trusting you with their home or premises. Your website needs to make that decision feel safe, and make it easy to get in touch.

The portfolio is everything

For a builder, photos of completed projects are your most powerful sales tool. Before and after shots, progress photos, and finished results all tell the story of what working with you is actually like. Customers hiring a builder want to see the quality of your work before committing to a contract. If your website has no portfolio, or only a few photos, you're losing jobs to builders who show more.

Project types to showcase separately

  • Extensions: single storey, double storey, wrap-arounds
  • Loft conversions
  • Kitchen and bathroom renovations
  • New builds
  • Commercial and office fitouts
  • Groundworks and driveways if applicable

Testimonials from completed projects

A Google review from 'John S.' is valuable. A testimonial that says 'We hired [builder] for a rear extension in [town]. The work was completed on time, on budget, and to a really high standard. Would recommend without hesitation' is more powerful because it gives potential customers a narrative they can see themselves in.

The quote request process

Most builders require a site visit before quoting, which is completely reasonable. But make the initial enquiry as easy as possible. A short contact form asking for project type, rough size, and location is enough to start the conversation. The less friction at the enquiry stage, the more enquiries you receive.

Insurance and accreditations

FMB membership, Trustmark, CHAS, or simply carrying public liability insurance at a stated level. These all matter to customers considering a building project. Display them clearly. They reduce the perceived risk of hiring you, which is the main barrier you're trying to overcome.

The average building project is worth several thousand pounds. A website that converts even one extra customer per month more than pays for itself.
